A Hill I Am Ready to Die On: Red Light Therapy

If you have followed any sort of health and wellness page in the past two years, then you probably know at least the basic information about red light therapy.

And yes, while I am currently writing this in a red light mask that not only covers my entire face but my neck and chest as well, that’s actually not the red light therapy I’m talking about.

This is not the kind of red light therapy that’s going to stimulate collagen production or reverse the signs of aging. This is the kind of red light therapy that costs less than your next coffee and turns your average night into a great night.

Maybe this is because I am a water sign (actually a triple water sign) or because I’m just a girl, but getting ready for bed has always been a multi-hour process for me. I absolutely love taking the time to myself to shower off, do skincare, brush my hair, and overall just take my time.

When I used to own my house, I actually had a Jacuzzi tub, and I kid you not, I would take at least an hour-long bath every single night. I actually still dream about this bathtub. I miss it so much.

Now, I love a health and wellness trend. I have my very own reverse osmosis water filter on the counter. But I was reading an article about circadian rhythm and how bright overhead lights can really throw your circadian rhythm off at night. Amazing, I hate an overhead light, so in honor of health and wellness, I decided to make all the lights in my bathroom red lights.

This has taken my nightly routine to another level. Now, I’m no scientist, nor a doctor of any kind, so I can’t actually tell you whether or not this has changed my circadian rhythm. But what I can tell you is that it has absolutely romanticized my entire routine that I had already loved so much.

There’s something about the mood lighting that just makes me forget about the entire day. As soon as I turn those red lights on, every stress or frustration from the day just leaves my system. The red light makes my bathroom feel so luxurious. It makes my skin look incredible, even on the days when it is looking less than ideal. And I’ve turned a nightly routine into a nightly ritual.

I have been doing some pretty powerful intention setting since I started this routine. Whether or not it’s 100% related, who knows? What I do know is that five-dollar red light paper (that’s made for Christmas decorating) has turned this water sign into an absolute siren, no ocean needed.

When people hear the phrase “romanticizing your life,” I think the assumption is made that it’s flowers, chocolates, or falling in love.

Romanticizing my life has always been about taking these little moments and just making them a touch more special.

Lighting a candle, burning some incense, putting on my slippers, or absolutely basking in a red light like a lizard under a heat lamp.

Romanticizing your life doesn’t have to involve these big, monumental changes. You don’t have to start wearing pink every single day or pretend that you’re happy and in love with life every single moment. But I do challenge you to start with just slowing down.

Instead of planning the next goal or setting yourself up to accomplish the next task, slow down and enjoy all the little moments that have brought you exactly where you are now. Enjoy those moments because when you look back on your life, I hope you think of millions of these small moments that you took just for yourself.

Get romantic, and get romantic with yourself.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go put some moon water in my oil diffuser and stand under my red light shower. And I’m so excited to get to do so.

All my love,

Kaitlin
